Appendix F:

As a counselor my number one goal remains to maintain an environment that is safe, inclusive, and equitable for all students. Especially, those who are apart of special populations.  Those who identify as being neurodivergent or disABLED deserve to experience community on campus. Often disabled people feel invisible with no outward connection to the campus. There should be more celebrations, clubs, and groups on campus that support disabled people out loud.

Striving to create a community that is welcoming and acknowledges students’ unique differences but does not focus on deficits.  When students meet with me, we talk about the importance of having pride in who they are, and not being ashamed to express the need for support. Empowering students to advocate for themselves and learn how to push past the fear that maybe interfering with their academic success. Through advocacy, I can assess the student’s needs, and connect them with the specific resources on campus and in the community to promote equity. The disABLED student population at WLAC comes from various backgrounds. I have served students from every continent on the planet. Marginalized racial and ethnic groups, various religions, members from LGBTQ+, Veterans, and undocumented immigrants. And all of them have the same goal, “TO BE SUCCESSFUL”! To accomplish their goals and live the life that they have envisioned for themselves; not what society, their parents, or extended family have dictated to them. As a counselor who identifies with the humanistic theoretical perspective I am dedicated to: Empowering, enhancing well-being, and actively guiding students to fulfilling their potential.

On campus I have been identified as a Veteran ally. Veterans who receive VA Chapter 31, Veteran Readiness, and Employment (VR&E) benefits are eligible to receive DSPS services. Chapter 31 Veterans have a verifiable service-connected disability. My experience as an adjunct Veteran counselor at LATTC, has aided me in being a supportive advocate for Veterans in need.

Often Veterans feel there are too many barriers with accessing benefits. Ensuring that all the Veterans that are referred to me have the proper educational counseling and advising necessary to receive their Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH).  To provide great support to our students, I continually educate myself on best practices by attending trainings, reading books, and research material (refer to Professional Development tab).  Committed to serving our students and, having a responsibility to stay educated on matters that have an impact on student’s lives. I will continue my pursuit of knowledge and resources, into the next year… Year Four…. Let’s Gooooo!
