Counseling Pedagogy
Acknowledging differences, not deficits!

Reflecting on my counseling pedagogy and practices over the past year, I remain committed to serving all students from a Humanistic perspective.
“Humanistic Psychology is a perspective that emphasizes looking at the whole person, and the uniqueness of everyone. Humanistic Psychology asserts that people have free will and are motivated to achieve their potential and self-actualize.”
The goals of Humanistic Psychology include:
1. Empower individuals
2. Enhance well-being
3. Actively guide people towards fulfilling their potential
My goal as a counselor working within Disabled Students Programs & Services (DSPS) is in direct alignment with the humanistic perspective. Striving to cultivate an environment of safety, motivation, and empowerment that celebrates neurodivergence.
Explicit biases towards students with disabilities contributes to stereotypes that impact their self-esteem, limiting their potential, and academic success.
During my counseling sessions I consider the uniqueness of each student and provide empowerment and guidance; which increases the likeliness that they will actualize their potential and achieve their goals.
The following vital skills, that expand far beyond the classroom, are a part of my interactive process with the student:
1. Effective and assertive
communication
2. Self-awareness
3. Self-actualization
4. Confidence building
5. Accountability
6. Advocacy
